During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
